Broadband Router

The broadband router is responsible for taking the features of a standard network switch, and combining them with a DHCP server and the firewall. Broadband routers are known for their convenience and ease of setting up, and for this reason, they are frequently used in homes or small offices.

As the name implies, the broadband router will typically be used in connection with broadband Internet access, and this includes DSL or even cable modems. A broadband router allows for a number of network activities, and these include LAN gaming, P2P, and the sharing of Internet connections. When it comes to home networking, the broadband router uses the Ethernet standard.

This basically means that it makes use of Ethernet cables in order to connect the computers to the modem, and all computers can be connected to the LAN for the home. There are a number of companies which are selling broadband routers to consumers today.

Some of the things which make them distinct from other router types include the amount of ports that they have, along with the port types, and how they connect to network devices and external modems. Other names which may be used to describe broadband routers include home gateways, or residential gateways. Broadband Router Features

Whether you wish to set up a wired home network, or a wireless one, you will need a broadband router. The reason for this is because this router will be responsible for allowing every computer in the home network to transfer and receive data. It also allows each computer to access the Internet.

Routers can send information through your home network or the Internet, and it can accomplish this through signals which may be wired or wireless. There are three key functions that routers have, and this is to share the Internet connection among every PC within the home or office, route data to every computer within the home network, and make the network secure by acting as the filter which exists between the Internet and the computers on the network. This basically means that the broadband router is also a type of firewall.

Broadband Router Advantages

Broadband routers have a number of advantages. First, they are very secure. Because they act as a filter between the home network and the Internet, you have a high level of security when it comes to hackers and other individuals who could do harm on your network. The second big advantage is speed.

Because broadband routers make use of Ethernet cables as opposed to wireless signals, they have a tendency to be much faster than their wireless counterparts. While wireless signals become weaker as you move further away from the wireless router, broadband routers can maintain their speed for much greater distances. Because broadband routers have been around for quite some time, they are very affordable, and can be purchased for under $100.

Broadband Router Issues

There are a number of issues which are associated with these types of routers. The first is the large mess of cables and wires which can become tangled together. We all know how annoying it is to get caught up in cables, or to have to untangle them. Additionally, cables can accidentally be pulled out of their sockets, which can cause the connection to drop.

Another big issue that comes with broadband routers is that it is difficult to route the wires to certain locations within a home or office. There are many cases in which people actually have to drill holes in walls just so they can fit the cable through, and allow the connection to be routed to another area. This is an expensive and time consuming issue to deal with.

I have a TENDA ADSL2+ modem #D840R, and set up a NETGEAR WGR 614 v6 router. both the desktop it is wired to and the laptop that use it (wirelessly) show speed tests (with no other programs running) of 400+ KB/sec incoming and 200+ KB/sec putgoing speed. The laptop shows a strong signal, excellent connection--54.0 MB/sec. the problem is that once connected to a P2P prgram, the maximum incoming speed I can get is 50KB/second. the modem has a static IP address-- as set by the service provider--
how can I get the router to pass the speed I need for P2P programs? I have forwarded ports for the program I use on both machines--
Help!! I cannot ask fir tech support here, I am in a country where i don't speak much of the languaf=ge, and cannot call a US 1-800 number form here, plus I am a real newbie at this stuff!!!
